The Move-Out Clean That Actually Gets Your Deposit Back

Deposit disputes almost never come down to the middle of the living room floor. They come down to a short list of specific places, and property managers walk them in roughly the same order every single time.

The kitchen goes first: inside the oven, inside and under the refrigerator, the range hood filter, the tops of cabinets, and inside every cabinet and drawer. An empty cabinet with crumbs in the corner reads as a unit that was not cleaned, and it colors how the rest of the walkthrough goes.

Bathrooms come second: the toilet base and the bolt caps, the tub or shower surround, grout, the exhaust fan cover, and the mirror and fixtures. Anything with mineral scale needs descaling, not wiping, and this is where do-it-yourself move-outs most often fall short.

Then the details that read as damage if they are actually just dirt: baseboards, door frames, switch plates, window sills and tracks, closet shelves, blinds, and vents. Add the garage floor and the patio if you had them. Marks left where furniture sat are worth a second pass, since they are easy to mistake for wear.

Two practical notes. Do the cleaning after the movers are gone, because an empty unit shows everything and a half-empty one hides it. And take dated photos of every room when you finish. If a claim ever comes up against your deposit, the photos settle it faster than any argument, and any cleaning company worth hiring will take them for you on request.
